Editor’s Notes…
Fall is just around the corner – although it is still hot and dry, it won’t be long before cooler weather moves in. It’ll soon be time to bring out the jackets and electric blankets! As much as I love the summer months, I am ready for cooler temperatures for a change. The holidays are creeping up too – my grand kids are ready for the whole nine yards!
Reflections of years passed crossed my mind earlier today and with it came memories of when my own children were younger. As I
watched the school bus pass my house this afternoon reminded me of the time when my children rode that same bus. Now my grandson Nicolas rides it home. Tears filled my eyes as I remembered watching his mother Theresa getting off that bus in the same spot when she was his age – now she is 23 – where has all the time gone? How did it pass me by so quickly? Why can’t we just hold onto time before it creeps away?
I brush away the tears as Nicolas runs to me. He is so full of energy when he gets home – and he’s always ready to greet us with a big hug and a kiss! “Are you crying, Mama?” he asks so innocently.
“No, Baby! An eyelash got crossed up and made my eyes water!” I answered, hugging him close. One day, his own children will be riding the bus and probably getting off right here in this same spot. But I’ll save that story for another day! My, how time passes!
I started reading a book of short stories today called Reasons For and Advantages of Breathing – Stories by Lydia Peelle. I was totally absorbed in the first story called Mule Killers. I will not tell you what happens in these stories but I will tell you this – if you haven’t read it then you’re missing some very good short stories. I am almost finished with the first story and I know that the rest that follows are as good if not better than the first one.
The book didn’t look like much when it came into my possession and my first impression was “this book must not be that good” – it’s dull paper back appearance shocked me at first but as I started reading that first story, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Lydia had captured yet another spellbound audience. You know the old saying is correct once again: Never judge a book by its cover!
If you’re curious about how to get a copy of this book, you can check out Harper Perennial books at www.harperperennial.com. As a matter of fact, follow the prompts on the website and you'll be able to read this book online - I recommend that you purchase it but check it out - check out their entire selection.
It’s getting late and I do need to finish up work here in the office – church starts soon and I need to get going. I’ll write again soon.
